Mar’Quel joined Rainier Valley Rowing her freshmen year of high school and went on to row at Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center all four years of high school. Mar’Quel loves rowing and listening to the sound of the boat “Rowing is a privilege, not just a sport. It has changed my life because I have learned life lessons on my team and at the boathouse that I couldn’t have learned anywhere else.” Mar’Quel loves being on the water and hearing how the water sounds when she rows. When reflecting on her time as a junior rower, she feels a great sense of accomplishment because she learned how to workout outside of her comfort zone and push herself. As a Coach Across America AmeriCorps member dedicated to the Renton Rowing Center, she’s most excited to see how rowing and water sports will impact her community. Mar’Quel was born in Oakland and has lived in Renton since she was six years old. She graduated from Renton High School in 2013 and now attends Highline Community College. In her spare time, Mar’Quel enjoys dancing, performing, and volunteering at her church.
